2014 Rally Lodging and Hotel Information |
While now may seem very early to start planning for accomodations for the July 2014 trip to Oshkosh, it really is not. If you have been to AirVenture before, you know that local lodging can be hard to find and books up early. We have created a separate lodging page with information about various lodging options for each day of the 2014 Rally and at the final destination, AirVenture.
Each entrant is required to make their own reservations at each location. |

The event has a long history of flying navigational and pilot skills challenges to several intermediate points and final destinations:
- Bakersfield, CA
- Las Vegas, NV
- Bullhead City, AZ / Laughlin, NV
- Palm Springs, CA
- Redding, CA
- Bend, OR
For the 50th time out, we've decided to make the challenge even bigger and head out to:
Oshkosh, WI and EAA AirVenture
This is going to be fun! The Rally has always challenged a pilot's planning, flying and navigational skills. For the 50th anniversary, we're raising the bar even higher with a 1500+ nautical mile route and some additional challenges along the way.
More details will follow as we progress with our planning, but we wanted to get some information out to pilots as soon as possible so that you can start your own planning.

- Rapid City, SD (RAP) - overnight stop

Each day will include a mandatory intermedaite stop for lunch and fuel. As in the past, each leg is likely to include extra checkpoints along the way.
Rally participants depart Hayward, CA (HWD) in the morning of Thursday, July 24, 2014 and arrive Wendover, UT (ENV) in the afternoon after flying two legs of approximately 250-300 nm each, with a mandatory lunch/refueling stop enroute.
At ENV, crews stay overnight at a local hotel and will attend a group briefing for the next leg of the rally. On Friday morning, July 25 the rally will launch from ENV and again fly two legs with a mandatory lunch/fuel stop, ending for the day at Rapid City, SD (RAP).
Another hotel for the night, another briefing, and then crews are launched on Saturday morning, July 26 from RAP landing for the day at Madison, WI (MSN) with two more legs enroute and the mandatory lunch/fuel stop. The scored competition ends with the landing at MSN.
Arrival at Oshkosh
The crews will be briefed at MSN for a special flight procedure the following day as a scheduled group arrival at Oshkosh (OSH) for Airventure. We anticipate launching aircraft from MSN in the morning with the objective of having everyone on deck at OSH by noon local time. With all rally crews at OSH on Sunday, EAA Airventure officially opens the next day and continues until August 3. We anticipate our awards reception and dinner to be held Tuesday evening, July 29. Entrants may depart anytime after arrival and stay for as much, or little, of the Airventure experience; however, we hope they will stay at least until the awards on Tuesday evening.
More Details
The rally competition between HWD and MSN will be scored using similar rules to those used in the 2013 Air Rally. The existing scoring methods can be found on this page. For the 2014 event, we plan to make a minimum crew of two MANDATORY. A waiver of this minimum requirement will only be considered if (a) the pilot has competed in the Hayward Air Race/Rally previously, AND has flown as PIC into AirVenture previously using the Special Flight Traffic Rules in effect at the time. Cash and trophy prizes will be awarded at OSH, and we anticipate media presence at our awards presentation.
